There are many questions often asked about mindfulness when people first hear about it. The following paragraphs will hopefully provide the answers to some typical questions asked.
What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is described as paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.
You have probably noticed how scattered your mind can be, constantly jumping from one thought to another all day long. Because our attention gets constantly diverted by this, we can spend most of our time on “automatic pilot”, without really being aware of what we are doing. In the same way, we may not be really “present”, moment-by-moment, for much of our lives: We can often be “miles away” without knowing it.
On automatic pilot, we are more likely to have our “buttons pressed”: we can get overwhelmed and carried away by our emotions and by what we “think” is happening. Events around us and thoughts, feelings and sensations in the mind (of which we may be only dimly aware) can trigger negative ways of thinking that are often unhelpful and may lead to worsening mood.
By becoming more aware of our thoughts, feelings, and body sensations, from moment to moment, we give ourselves the possibility of greater freedom and choice; we do not have to go into the same old “mental ruts” that may have caused problems in the past.
In mindfulness, you learn first-hand how much the mind wanders, how it continuously shifts from one topic to another and how this mind wandering can allow negative thoughts and feelings to increase. You will learn how to catch these negative thought patterns before they spiral out of control… You then learn how to bring the mind back to the present moment.
Mindfulness helps to calm and focus your thoughts so you can enjoy some tranquility. As you know, tranquility isn’t easy to find in modern life, but it can be found — in fact, it’s inside you at this very moment! You would be surprised how many people now use mindfulness techniques daily and receive great benefits from their practice. But Mindfulness is a skill that takes time to develop. It is not easy, and like any skill it requires a certain level of effort, time, patience, and ongoing practice.

Join Senior Yoga Teacher Jamie Blowers for a yoga workshop that will give you all the knowledge you need to make correct alignment choices for YOUR BODY.
It is amazing how different our bodies are, so it’s no surprise that a posture will look completely different on you compared to the person on the mat next to you or the teacher in front of you. It is also common for misalignment to hold you back from going deeper or finding more strength within the physical practice.
So how do you know if you’re doing the right thing for your body? Jamie will be taking us through the fundamental ‘rules’ of alignment and how to apply them to your own body, get the most from each posture and improve your practice. Once you have this knowledge you are equipped for every type of movement class and maybe even how you move in life day to day.
There are only 12 places on this workshop so you are guaranteed the hands on, personal support needed to develop.

Tall Trees 3rd Annual Yogathon! ALL proceeds go to St John's Hospice Sunday 9th July 2017 10.00 - 18:00
Mick Hammond, who runs Tall Trees Yoga and Pilates Studio at Woodfield Park, Balby, and is a neighbour to St John’s Hospice, is running his third annual yogathon on Sunday July 9 from 10:00 to 6pm in his studio. Classes and workshops cost £5:00 or attendees can go to all sessions for £25, with all money going to St John’s Hospice. There will be a mindfulness workshop, a yoga and dance class, meditation and a sponsored ‘sun salutation’ or yogathon – will everything raised going to the hospice appeal. There will also be holistic therapies throughout the day with short treatments in return for donations to the cause. Mick said: “I am so proud of Tall Trees studio and the dedicated teachers who provide the classes. It is a beautiful place for yoga, we are so lucky and it’s a pleasure and a honour to give a little back by supporting such a worthwhile cause.” Chris Smith, Community Fundraiser for the Hospice Appeal, said: “I want to thank Mick for running this event. It’s great to hear that all money raised from the day will go to our hospice appeal. During this 2.5 hour workshop we will break down the practice of inversions, awaken the core and apply correct alignment principles to help you gain the confidence to step outside of your comfort zone.
Inversions, poses where the heart is held higher than the head, can be daunting and scary but are also very exciting and beneficial on a mental, physical and emotional level. They help the body to recover from the compressive effects of gravity helping to reduce back pain. The increased flow of blood to the brain supplies it with more nutrients and oxygen improving concentration, memory and clarity of mind.
